Sandra Hutchinson
Qualifications:
B.A. in Writing Arts
B.A. in Elementary Education
Certification in Reading
(Anticipated Summer 2013)
Experience and Procedure:
I have had the privilege of working with a variety of students ranging from Kindergarten to 8th grade throughout my Rowan career. I have tutored students specifically in Reading based on the Basic Reading Inventory (BRI). The BRI is administered to tutees at the start of the first tutoring session. Testing can take as little as 45 minutes to 75 minutes depending upon the student. It measures the range of skills the student has by recognizing his or her strengths and weaknesses. Once the test results are gathered, I take the time to analyze the results to develop an appropriate plan for the student.
Resources:
Fortunately, I have an abundant amount of resources available to me as a tutor, including past activities I have developed as well as Rowan University’s Reading Clinic. Fun games, hands-on manipulatives, and encouraging activities keep the interest of the student throughout my planned lessons.
Lesson Design:
Most importantly, I design my lesson plans with a balanced literacy approach to meet the specific needs and interests of the learner. A balanced literacy approach includes instruction that focuses on four literacy components: guided reading (comprehension), writing, word work (phonics, spelling, vocabulary), and fluency.
